From August 21 to September 1, 2006, Damon Azali, Patrisse Cullors, Mark-Anthony Johnson, Francisca Porchas, and Eric Mann of the Labor/Community Strategy Center were in New Orleans for the 1st Anniversary of Katrina.
They met with many grassroots groups while in New Orleans and had meetings with the People’s Hurricane Relief Fund & Oversight Coalition, Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children, Safe Streets/Strong Communities, New Orleans Worker Justice Coalition, and Junebug Productions theater group to learn about their courageous work in the face of the storm. They marched with 2,000 New Orleanians on the 1st Anniversary of Katrina. Katrina's Legacy: White Racism and Black Reconstruction in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, was strongly received in New Orleans, and they were able to distribute more than 150 books to New Orleans residents.
The Strategy Center delegation shares, “We learned more than we can express. Boarded up houses, boarded up schools, the brutality and corruption of the NOPD, the makeshift jails to lock up a new generation of youth for the crime of being Black and poor. The long-term plans of groups on the ground to continue the resistance, and the continued need for your interest and HELP.”
Mark-Anthony, Damon, Patrisse, Francisca, and Eric come back with stories, photos, and much more clarity on the reality of the groups on the ground and the continuing and non-negotiable need and demand for the Right of Return for the more than 250,000 members of New Orleans’ Black Diaspora. We urge the 225 people who were so generous in attending our last meeting, and who purchased more than 325 copies of Katrina’s Legacy, to come back to the church to continue this long-term dialogue about Black Liberation in LA and in NOLA and how it is part of an overall multi-racial anti-racist, anti-imperialist movement—and the role you can play in building that movement.
If your are interested in being a part of continuing support for the Black people of New Orleans, please join us on September 28th!
